Continental Spices and Video

Continental Spices and Video's door is usually closed, but today it was wide open.

Which you can't see from this photo.
Here, I found a wide selection of Southeast Asian spices, spice mixes, a freezer with roti and other Indian flatbreads and a fresh meat counter with halal (processed while adhering to Islamic law) meats. There's also a shisha/hubble-bubble section.

Many spice packages had date stamps of 2009. That is a very long time ago. While the spices wouldn't be dangerous, they might not taste great. The date issue also made me suspicious of the fresh dessert case. Looking at the Yelp reviews, this has been an ongoing problem, which is too bad.

When I came in, the owner was engaged in a high-spirited sales transaction with a man who appeared to be selling him phone cards and possibly ripping him off, based on the conversation I overheard regarding the salesman changing prices.

Which was sort of funny, as prices here are rarely on or even near items, so I had to ask before paying. But the prices seemed fine about what I'd expect, sometimes lower than elsewhere. I bought a giant block of paneer (sold for half the price than the co-op charges, down the street), frozen packages of bread that I hope aren't freezer-burned, and a fried chickpea-flour snack that has turned out to be addictive in the best way.

Alas, I didn't see any videos. Maybe next time I'll ask.
